Philip Warren led me into his office, closed the door, and set Grandma’s check on the desk between us. “Mr. Brooks, this check is genuine,” he said. “Your grandmother’s account holds far more than eight million dollars.” I stared at him. Nobody in our family had ever believed she had more than a small pension.

He opened a folder and turned a photograph toward me. It showed my grandfather Raymond beside an oil derrick, grinning, with a sealed letter clipped underneath that bore my name. “Before I explain, there is something you must read,” Warren said. My hands felt numb as I reached for it. Then my phone buzzed on my knee. It was Dad, and his voice cracked in a way I had never heard. “Nathan, where are you? Something terrible has happened to Grandma.”

Grandma had passed away that morning in her sleep. Her neighbor found her beside the fireplace, still wrapped in Grandpa’s wool mittens. I sat frozen while Dad sobbed through the phone, then ended the call and looked at Warren. He nodded gently. “She phoned me two weeks ago,” he said. “Her doctors had given her only a few weeks. She had hidden a lung illness from everyone.” The cough, the hand on the wall, the tired eyes. I had seen it all and still left.

Warren explained the rest. Decades ago, Grandpa Raymond had bought cheap ranch land outside Bozeman, and oil leases on it had paid royalties ever since. Grandma never spent them. Her account held fifty-two million dollars, and she chose to live in a leaking cabin because it was where she had been happiest. “She told me the moment your family knew, they would start visiting for the money instead of for her,” he said. “So she wanted proof of who loved her before they learned the truth.”

I opened the letter with trembling fingers. “Nathan, I gave each of them a check for eight million dollars to see who would take their grandmother seriously,” Grandma had written. “Your father tore his up, your brother laughed, and you were the only one who stayed to fix my door. The bank will honor your check. The rest of my money goes into a trust, and you will decide who deserves a share. Give it to those who come with love, not with a hand held out.”

At the funeral, the family arrived in silence. Dad stood at the back holding the four taped pieces of his check, tears running down his face, and he could not look at me. I did not hand out money that day. I rebuilt the cabin roof, and anyone who wished to share in the trust spent a week there first, helping. Dad came in March. I keep the cabin, and every winter I park outside it, and I swear I can hear her listening for my engine.
