I filled it myself. Two slices of roast beef, mashed potatoes, green beans, and a dinner roll. Then I set down the spoon, slid the ring off my finger, and placed it on the edge of the plate beside the gravy. I held the plate out across the steam pan. \u201cHere\u2019s your ring, Mrs. Pruett,\u201d I said. \u201cSupper comes with it. And we\u2019re cutting the cake at eight. I\u2019d like you to stay.\u201d<\/p>\n
She stared at the plate. Her keys trembled in her hand. Nobody in that hall moved a fork. Then, behind her, the side door beside the flags opened again, and the whole room turned. Wesley stood in the doorway in his rumpled tuxedo shirt, lake mud on his shoes, his eyes swollen red. He looked past me, at his mother. \u201cMama,\u201d he said, \u201cdon\u2019t you take one more thing from her. She doesn\u2019t owe us a dime.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then he told the truth in front of 175 people. There was no honeymoon cruise. His mother had given him the $9,000 to book it in March, and he had lost every cent betting on ball games online. He had been hiding it for months. That morning, his mother had asked to see the cruise tickets, and he panicked. He couldn\u2019t face standing at the altar on top of that lie. His sister had known nothing either.<\/p>\n
His mother sat down hard in a folding chair. She had sent her daughter to bill me for money her own son had gambled away. Every table in the room heard it. She took the offering envelope back from Daddy, tore it in half, and then in half again. \u201cLacey Ann,\u201d she said, her voice breaking, \u201cI am so ashamed.\u201d Wesley apologized to me too, and to Daddy, and then he walked back out the door alone.<\/p>\n
I gave her the ring anyway. It was her mother\u2019s, and it belonged in her family, not mine. She stayed. His aunt brought her a cup of coffee. She ate every bite of that roast beef, and at eight o\u2019clock she stood beside me while I cut the cake. When the band started, Elmer crossed the room in his brown wedding suit, bowed to Grandma Opal, and gave her the first wedding dance of her eighty-nine years.<\/p>\n
Then Daddy danced with me, my white sneakers squeaking on the VFW floor, and nobody sat down until the band packed up at midnight. Wesley went to a recovery program that winter and paid his mother back over three years. I never married him. His mother sends me a Christmas card every year, signed with love.
