Kayla walked slowly toward the sign planted in the grass beside the driveway. It was bright red, and staked deep enough that no wind could move it. Brandon came up behind her, still holding a paddleboard, and I watched his smile slide off his face. Across the top, in thick white letters, it said SOLD. Below that was Patricia Doyle’s name, and a smaller strip reading CLOSING TODAY.

Then the cottage door opened from the inside. An older man stepped onto the porch holding a set of keys, with a woman carrying a clipboard behind him. “Can I help you?” he asked. Kayla’s voice came out thin. “This is my mother’s house.” The man glanced at the sign and said, “Not since nine o’clock this morning.” Kayla turned and stared straight into the security camera, as if she knew I was watching.

I answered Kayla’s call from my sister’s porch, two states away. She was crying so hard I could barely follow her. I told her calmly that the cottage had sold three weeks earlier, and the sale had closed that morning. The Alvarezes, my retired neighbors, were buying it for their daughter, who had dreamed of living by the lake for years. Patricia Doyle had handled every paper, and I had signed them all from my kitchen table.

Kayla accused me of punishing her. I said I had only taken her at her word. She had told me Brandon wanted the cottage to feel like it belonged to them, and I could not hand them my deed, but I could hand it to someone who would treasure it. Then Brandon grabbed the phone and shouted that I had ruined their summer. I let him finish. Then I reminded him that fifteen years of weekends had never once earned me a thank you.

The line went silent for a long moment. Kayla finally whispered that she had been ashamed since the day she asked me to stay away, but she was afraid of disappointing Brandon. She admitted he had spent months pushing her to talk me into signing the cottage over. I told her I had suspected as much since March, when Patricia mentioned that Brandon had called asking about the deed and the property taxes. That was why I made the call. It was never revenge. I was protecting what was mine.

Brandon drove home alone that evening. Kayla stayed on the driveway while Mr. Alvarez brought her a glass of lemonade and told her the lake would always welcome her as a guest. In July she drove to my sister’s house, hugged me hard, and apologized in person. I used part of the sale money to buy a smaller cottage on another lake, with a guest room that has her name on the door. Brandon apologized too, months later. Now everybody calls before visiting, including me.
