The photograph showed the scratch card with its matching symbols, beside the lottery receipt dated my seventieth birthday. Trevor stared at it, then at me. The letter explained everything in my careful handwriting. I had won eight million dollars, W&D Property Holdings was mine, and the house they lived in belonged to the mother they were sending away. I had chosen the name Walter and Dorothy so he would be part of every step.

Amanda burst into tears and said they had only wanted what was best for me. I told her I had heard every word that night, and I had also heard my son sigh instead of defending me. Nathan Brooks had sent the notice because I would no longer be anyone’s landlady, and the house would be sold. Education trusts for Owen and his sister Lily were already built, and neither parent could touch them.

Trevor sank into his chair and asked quietly whether I hated him. I said I didn’t, but love had never meant free labor. He admitted he had let Amanda’s complaints wear him down because arguing was harder than agreeing. He did not ask for money, which was the first thing he had done right in years. I told him the cottage in Savannah was real, and so was the invitation to visit, once they proved they could be a family without me paying for it.

I left at ten o’clock that morning, with my suitcase and Walter’s photograph. Trevor found a smaller rental and a second job, and the house sold to a young family in spring. Six months later, he drove to Savannah alone, stood on my wrapped porch, and apologized without being asked. Frances brought lemonade. The next summer, Owen and Lily visited, and I let them scratch a card on the porch swing. They won two dollars, and all of us laughed together. I never told them how much was left.
