Harlan stayed in my shop for another twenty minutes. He asked whether I would attend if he personally invited me.

I didn’t want to force my way into a place where I wasn’t wanted.

“That’s not what I’m asking,” he said. “I’m asking whether you’ll come as my guest.”

Before leaving, he asked me to bring Dad’s old welding helmet to the wedding.

The next morning, Harlan called. He had spoken with Jenna privately. He repeated Spencer’s words from the phone call. She went quiet.

Harlan reminded her that the arch was a gift from her brother, made in memory of the father they had both lost. He told her a person’s worth wasn’t measured by clothes or connections.

Jenna called me that afternoon, her voice shaky.

“I’m sorry, Cole. I let Spencer and Mom convince me appearances mattered more than family. I was ashamed of something I should have been proud of.”

I told her how deeply she had hurt me. She cried and asked if I would still come.

I agreed.

He explained that he had spent his life building a company with workers whose hands looked like mine. He said he would never allow anyone to treat those men as though their work made them lesser. Then he handed me an envelope. Inside was a note thanking me for making the arch, but I told him the thanks belonged to Jenna and Dad.

On October fourth, I arrived wearing a shirt, my hands still scarred. Harlan greeted me and shook my hand firmly.

In his toast, he praised people who build things that last. Then he pointed toward the arch and told the guests it had been made by Jenna’s brother, who had refused payment for his labor.

Jenna looked at me beneath the dogwood flowers. I remembered the girl Dad photographed beneath the tree.

After the ceremony, she hugged me and whispered, “Dad would have loved it.”

I looked at the steel blossoms catching the evening light.

My hands were still rough. The scars hadn’t disappeared. Dad had taught me that honest work was never shameful.

A few weeks later, Harlan offered me a contract making custom railings for one of his new buildings. I accepted because my work had earned
