Beatrice stared at the nurse.

“What do you mean you’ve seen him before?”

The woman wiped her eyes and took a shaky breath.

“Three years ago, my husband died in this hospital. He was driving home from work when another car crossed the center line. I couldn’t afford to miss work, so I spent my nights sitting in the hospital cafeteria, crying over cups of coffee.”

She paused.

“One evening, a little boy came in with his mother. He couldn’t have been more than thirteen. He saw me crying and asked if I was okay. I told him I was just having a difficult night.”

The nurse looked down at the photograph again.

“That boy was him.”

Apparently, the teenager had remembered her from that night. He had recognized her hospital badge when she started driving through the coffee stand months earlier.

But there was something else.

“He told me something before leaving that night,” she continued. “He said his father had died, too. He told me his mother always said that strangers could become family through small acts of kindness.”

Beatrice felt tears gathering in her eyes.

The nurse immediately drove to the hospital.

Beatrice closed the window, told Dale she needed an emergency break, and followed her.

When they reached the ICU, the boy’s mother was sitting beside his bed. Her eyes were swollen from crying.

The nurse approached carefully.

“I’m the woman whose coffee your son has been buying every morning.”

His mother looked confused.

Then the nurse explained everything.

The 387 coffees. The birthday cupcake. The little green Honda that always appeared before her silver Corolla.

His mother began crying.

She reached into her purse and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“He wrote this before the accident,” she whispered. “I found it in his backpack.”

The nurse unfolded it.

There were only three sentences.

Sometimes people look sad even when they smile.

I can’t bring her husband back, but I can make sure she starts her mornings knowing somebody cares.

I hope someone does that for Mom someday.

The nurse pressed the letter against her chest.

For the first time since losing her husband, she wasn’t the one comforting somebody else.

She was being reminded that kindness had found its way back to her.

Three days later, the boy opened his eyes.

His first words were barely audible.

“Did she get her coffee?”

The nurse laughed through her tears.

“Yes, sweetheart. But tomorrow, you’re letting me buy yours.”

He smiled weakly.

A month later, when he finally returned home, his mother brought him to the coffee stand.

The nurse was waiting outside with two vanilla lattes.

And beside her stood a little wooden sign.

“Coffee paid forward by the boy who taught an entire town how to care.”

Beatrice still remembers those 387 mornings.

But the morning that changed everything was the one when the boy finally came back.
